Mercury will be turning retrograde next week, and with Venus having gone direct on Sunday (Sept. 6th), we have a brief window in which none of the personal planets are retrograde. If there are decisions that demand immediate attention, now’s the time--although since Venus and Mercury are both in the shadow of their retrograde (meaning they are covering the degrees they will or did cover during their retrograde), the best time for major decisions isn’t until late October. But, life goes on. We need to make decisions and move ahead with plans.
Make sure you feel into the decisions you’re making. Avoid getting caught up in over-analyzing. Notice what happens in your body when you imagine choosing one course of action over another. Don’t do what you think you should, or what’s expected of you. Do what feels right to you--to your heart and soul.
The most significant astrological event this week is Saturday (Sept. 12th) night’s partial solar eclipse in Virgo at 11:41pm PST. Eclipses usher in radical change, in both inner and outer circumstances. Virgo has to do with daily routine, health, and service. This energy supports us to set intentions and visualize what we’d like in these areas. How can you alter your routines, your diet, etc. in order to better support your health and vitality? This will enable you to better do your work, to serve your community, and Earth.
Sometimes there’s a heaviness to making changes of this type. But it doesn’t have to be difficult or uncomfortable. When the Sun first shifted into Virgo at the end of August I did a week long cleanse, and realized first hand how enjoyable it can be to change diet and routine. It felt so good to eat so well, that it was a real pleasure, and I had no trouble continuing with some of the changes I’d made after my supposed cleanse was over.
When we strive to improve ourselves, the biggest danger is being hard on ourselves, expecting more of ourselves, focusing on all we have yet to accomplish rather than how far we’ve come. Consider that a part of perfection is accepting imperfection. Harness Virgo’s discernment but avoid criticizing or being down on yourself. We don’t need criticism and negative judgment to improve, but rather support and love. There is nothing more powerful than loving and forgiving yourself.
Most significantly, this is a time to release not just old patterns of behaviour, but old patterns of thought that no longer serve. Often the stories we tell about ourselves become so ingrained that we don’t even notice they are stories--they simply become our truth. These stories, so often, are like ruts that keep us traveling the same routes, and prevent us from opening to new experiences, new realizations. Our stories can keep us from opening to the magic and possibility that are available in every moment.
I’ve had some glimpses beyond my own stories in the past few weeks, and let me tell you--what’s beyond is beautiful. Lately, it’s been easier for me to SEE my stories--my typical judgements, the rutted ways in which I close myself off. And in seeing, I’ve been able to set those stories aside. When I did so, I felt my heart open to allow in greater joy. I felt myself expand beyond who I thought I was.
As Saturn travels the last degrees of Scorpio until September 17th, it’s now time to release those hardened stories, let go the negativity and judgement. Allow yourself to to move beyond your defitions. Beyond our stories there is infinite possibility and the promise of our dreams. Knowing yourself is to connect in the moment with your soul, not to define in words who you think you are. Words are finite, but our souls are infinite--so words will never do justice to who we are.
